English IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon has died after sustaining massive injuries in the Las Vegas Indy 300 earlier today.

A 15-car pile up during the race, which was the season finale, ended with debris scattered across the track and the race was red-flagged.

Wheldon was attended to immediately by doctors and flown to a local hospital with serious injuries, but didn't survive.

The driver, who took up karting as a four-year-old in England, was 33-years-old.

In 2003 he won the IRL IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year Award and in 2005 won the championship.

He's also claimed the famous Indianapolis 500 title on two occasions, the latter of which was earlier this year.

The remaining drivers will hold a five-lap parade in Wheldon's honour at the Las Vegas speedway after the race was cancelled.

Wheldon is survived by wife Susie and their two sons Sebastian and Oliver.

What a terrible shame. Makes one think about track ratings!

Not a pleasant video to watch but boy it shows how bad it was

Will Power is in the black and white car. Wade is in the red car. Wade is fine.
Full fuel loads. Yikes.
