Karters forum for informed discussion on all things Karting

I'm fairly new to running the KT100 and I'm looking for advice and comparisons of the popular (or not so popular) engine oils used for our kart engine. All personal experience or links to scientific comparisons are welcome. Currently we use Motul GP 2T at 60ml/L (16.6:1).

Yes I never seen any facts just personal views.

The old castrol R was a good oil and makes things bed in better and I think better for compression but you cannot leave it mixed for more than a week. I have heard old stuff seperates easily and also high octane fuels it will seperate and I have seen proof of this from someone that ran it and seized a couple of KT's and this was why when I saw the fuel. That was a few years ago when fuels were more open !!

Personally a good quality oil that is designed for the revs that you run at is the key in my view and easy to get at a resonable price.

The reasonable price seems to be a challenge!! Anyone running Redline?

Personally I have never run Redline ! Have heard all sorts of stories about it good and bad !!!

In some respects a oil that lots run with no issues is the way to go !

Hi Simon

I think which oils people tend to run are often down to personal preference. All of the current leading brand synthetic oils will be good products. Just out of interset though, i have an autobiography of Jeremy Burgess (He is the head mecahinc for Valentino Rossi, and Mick Doohan before him and Wayne Gardner before him). He is an immensely knowledgeable man on 2 stroke motors. In his book he said that back in the days of the 500cc 2 strokes, even though they had sponsorship from ELF and Shell at different times, they still mixed Motul with their fuel.

We run  penrite sin in the kt its a high percentage caster oil mix makes the plug run real clean and easy to read
Nothing wrong with a castor like castrol R as well or Shell M castor/synthetic is another one !

We have tried a variety of oils over the years, and have come to the following conclusions (all non scientific of course!); We couldnt detect any preceptable peformance advantage from one oil to another, based on our personal experiences in regards outright engine performance. Sometimes the person that builds your engine will have an influence on your decision of which oil is best to run. I guess its whatever your comfortable with.

Finding true unbiased scientific research is very hard. Thanks for all your replies, I'll keep listening to the engine builder and work harder on the driver to find the speed we need!
Yes with speed alot of it comes from setup/gearing/tuning etc and being consistant in driving as well !
