Karters forum for informed discussion on all things Karting

Bec's topic got me thinking.

We have been breath tested at nationals and north islands over the recent years.

I am always bewildered as to why it is after the pre final or final.

Surely if you are going to do a test, why not do it on the out grid before tuning runs in the morning?

This is when you have a greater likely hood of someone having alcohol in their system from the night before.

Breath testing is their for safety of all competitors, those who you share the track with to make sure we are all coherent when we are racing.

Or is their some logical explaintion for it that I cant see?

It use to be done after the first tuning run so agree with you what has changed and they could race boozed for most if the day !!
It was also said to be done to parents or guardians of junior drivers as well as they have to look after them etc and have to be in a good state.

What has changed eh Nikki !!!!
Also what the limit is should be told/stated (it was as per the Road/ Police limits ,and zero tolerance on that no worries).
I had a debate on that when it first started so people actually knew what the deal was .
Also should be done at any event not just Island events or Nationals to keep people on there toes and safe.
Its hard to say whether it is better to test at the beginning of the day or later on. Alcohol effects and impares everyone quite differently and the residual effects of it last longer for some than others.

Personally i think it would better to test people earlier in the day with the option of retesting poeple later on if it becomes appartent that some indulges before the end of the day.

Just out of interest do we have a zero limit? Im assuming we just use a hand held device to do a breath screening test? A zero limit would be hard to purse if someone wanted to contest the result.
Exactly .No I had this arguement on the zero limit and it is as the Police setting so as long as does not go over that all good. The limit needs to be said as zero nothing at all ,could be a bad breath or some calone that you wear.
Yes a hand held device so you know how that works !!
Things that need sorting like alot of others bits to sort out and get correct for all.

Our limits will be the same as WADA wont they?

Because we are a member of CIK-FIA so it should be the same as all motorsports and every other sport. Nothing to do with police limits. If its not we maybe in breach of our affiliations.
Who knows not stated and they use the hand held units that you can buy so why is the limit not told ??

Rule F2.7 is very clear. Tolerance is zero.

Never used one and don't know how it works. Doc Muray is normally the operator. I will try to get some clarification from him.

A zero tolerance limit could cost kartsport money one of these days. Hand held breath test devices are not overly acurate but they are a good indication. They definately have a margin of error. When used on their own they are not evidence as to alcohol consumption.
